RTI is a RIGHT
The Right To Information gives every person the right and access to obtain information, documents, or data from public or government bodies without having to give reasons or pay an exorbitant fee. It is fundamental to participatory democracy, transparency, accountability, and the freedom of expression under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution and Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
RTI is Essential to Public Participation
The public is better able to participate in the democratic process when they have information about the activities and policies of their government. Public awareness of the reasons behind decisions can improve support and reduce misunderstandings and dissatisfaction. Future decisions are more likely to be based on objective and justifiable reasons as the public can ensure their interests are upheld based on facts.
Knowing that the decisions will be predictable improves confidence in the government!
RTI Encourages Transparency and Holds the State Accountable
All decisions made by the State must be documented and justified to the public. By ensuring the RTI we can ensure all future decisions and all decisions made are held accountable to the public and their interest. As such, RTI is considered a key tool in anti-corruption measures and redressing past harms made by the State and other entities.
